Bacterial and abiogenic carbonates formed in caves–no vital effect on clumped isotope compositions

چکیده
Speleothems (dominated by cave-hosted carbonate deposits) are valuable archives of paleoclimate conditions. As such, they potential targets clumped isotope analyses that may yield quantified data about past temperature variations. Clumped stalagmites, however, seldom provide useful values due to various fractionation processes. This study focuses on the determination microbially induced vital effect, i.e., processes related bacterial production. A cave site with biologically mediated amorphous calcium precitation was selected as a natural laboratory. Calcite deposits were farmed under UV lamp prevent activity, well control Microbiological and morphological investigations using scanning electron microscopy showed treatment effectively reduced number cells, production strongly influenced carbonate’s morphology. Stable oxygen calcite drip waters, measurements revealed that, although most studied carbonates formed close equilibrium, ? 47 varied widely from equilibrium fractionated data. Site-specific kinetic fractionations played dominant role in distribution values, whereas did not result detectable effect.

متن کاملStatistical clumped isotope signatures
High precision measurements of molecules containing more than one heavy isotope may provide novel constraints on element cycles in nature. These so-called clumped isotope signatures are reported relative to the random (stochastic) distribution of heavy isotopes over all available isotopocules of a molecule, which is the conventional reference. When multiple indistinguishable atoms of the same e...
متن کاملClumped isotope analysis of carbonates: comparison of two different acid digestion techniques.
RATIONALE The kinetic nature of the phosphoric acid digestion reaction enables clumped isotope analysis of carbonates using gas source isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS). In most laboratories acid digestions are performed at 25°C in sealed vessels or at 90°C in a common acid bath. Here we show that different Δ47 results are obtained depending on the digestion technique employed. METHODS S...
متن کاملMethane seep carbonates yield clumped isotope signatures out of equilibrium with formation temperatures
Methane cold seep systems typically exhibit extensive buildups of authigenic carbonate minerals, resulting from local increases in alkalinity driven by methane oxidation. Here, we demonstrate that modern seep authigenic carbonates exhibit anomalously low clumped isotope values (Δ47), as much as ∼0.2‰ lower than expected values. In modern seeps, this range of disequilibrium translates into appar...
متن کاملCarbonate clumped isotope thermometry of deep-sea corals and implications for vital effects
Here we calibrate the carbonate clumped isotope thermometer in modern deep-sea corals. We examined 11 specimens of three species of deep-sea corals and one species of a surface coral spanning a total range in growth temperature of 2–25 C. External standard errors for individual measurements ranged from 0.005& to 0.011& (average: 0.0074&) which corresponds to 1–2 C. External standard errors for ...
